If you’ve paid attention to music lately, you know there’s a full-on R&B/Soul revival happening, and it isn’t likely to slow down anytime soon. Sure, the genre hadn’t really gone anywhere, but a host of new artists over the past decade have doubled down on the creativity and have pushed boundaries further, while simultaneously paying respects to the foundation of the style. Dover’s Hoochi Coochi have embraced this process themselves, and the Dover foursome—FATZ HAWKINS (guitar, vocals), DANIELLE JOHNSON (vocals), SPENCER GREENE (keyboards) and CHELSEA GRANT (drummer)—are getting noticed. Last year, they were finalists in MUSIKARMAGEDDON X and were winners of the Delmarva Folk Hero Competition. Their slinky sound has elements of blues and jazz, and their upbeat material makes you wanna get down as Hawkins’ cold and heavy licks carry you along until Johnson’s honey dripping holler warms your spirits up. Grant’s drums are a perfect metronome, cymbals crash in time as her downbeat kicks things off with a fierce entrance, holding everything together and driving the group forward, while Greene’s keys drop a smooth layer under it all rounding out the funky sound. With so much raw talent and energy, once Hoochi Coochi takes the stage your dancing shoes don’t stand a chance.
