#INbudget ($0-$10), Visual Arts

With a studio in Philadelphia and a house in the Berkshires of Massachusetts, Jon Redmond’s current show offers a fresh view of his popular subject matters of choice, urban architecture and still lifes that juxtapose the natural and man-made.  Unusual angles and the absence of figures blur the difference between residential dwellings and commercial businesses, but pops of bright color pull the viewer’s attention through the windows to the vibrant energy that undoubtedly exists within.  He finds complex angles and shapes in his subject matter and showcases them in his paintings. These forms, whether created by dramatic shadows or fleeting rays of sunshine, come together to create the abstract compositions he enjoys most. He also recognizes the beauty and simplicity of light falling on the objects he chooses for his still lifes. Redmond ultimately seeks to capture his viewer’s interest by interpreting subjects through his distinctive, painterly style.

Royal Splendor: The Coronation Gown from The Crown, the first in a new Winterthur exhibition series entitled Eye on the Iconic, will feature the replica coronation gown worn in episode five, “Smoke and Mirrors,” of the Netflix series The Crown, a dramatized history of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. Like the richly symbolic centuries-old coronation ceremony, the coronation dress is iconic—one of the most celebrated dresses of the 20th century and a symbol of a historical moment witnessed by millions around the world. The replica dress is also a true icon, created in celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Join us this fall beginning October 20, 2017, to view this very special dress and experience the rich connections an object like this one makes between the Queen, her people, and the world through the celebration and memory of important historical moments. And look for future presentations in the Eye on the Iconic series, each highlighting a single remarkable object.
