To try and pigeonhole Atlanta-based sisters REBECCA and MEGAN LOVELL’s music as “roots rock” is falling way short of the mark. After putting their eponymous bluegrass (and recurring Philadelphia Folk Festival) act with sister Jessica, Lovell Sisters, behind them the two have crafted some of the most creative and genre defying rock ‘n’ roll on the East Coast. Jumping from a classic blues riff, hard and steady, the ladies will veer into gracefully melodic folksy harmonies, then swirl the whole thing in a psychedelic soup so hot it scalds your throat, drums pounding and topped with vocals raw enough to feel like they emanate from the very same afflicted windpipe. All the while they explore a depthness of musical ability that comes up from a well of talent, incorporating a multi-genre approach to provide a new twist on a usually traditional sound. Make no mistake they don’t shy away from the style that is at the heart of the roots rock twosome’s sound, and they’ve had pleasure of opening for (or backing up) a few of the biggest players in the game: Elvis Costello, Connor Oberst and most recently the smoking hot Gary Clark, Jr., to name a few. Larkin Poe will headline Thursday’s card at Ladybug, so don’t miss what’s sure to bring down the house and cap off a fantastic day of music with one blazing performance.
