Friday night’s headliner at Ladybug is about as driven as they come. Leigh, once a theater kid, has grown up, fallen in love with Nashville and found her voice; and now she hawkishly pursues a career in show business. For all its flawlessness, her voice is replete with slick and vigorous intensity, bearing the weight of legitimacy necessary to maintain genre credibility, full of all the soul and fire that paying your dues in an unforgiving industry can only foster. And while she is only just getting started, her lyrics—whether conveying sorrow or mirth—are full of the wisdom one would normally expect from someone much further along their journey. With her songwriting partner and The Voice Season 10 runner up Adam Wakefield, the rural Maryland native has penned some of the most stirring and poignant country roots music this side of Sturgill Simpson. Jenny Leigh is definitely no outlaw, however, and her music is meant to be enjoyed by everyone, encompassing a pop sensibility that would make any fan of Miranda Lambert a happy cowpoke.
