One of the more unique sounds at Ladybug this year comes from Ithaca, New York’s The Blind Spots. A casual listener would likely be attracted to their classic pop sensibilities and a polished sound, but dig in with any effort and you will easily be rewarded with so much more. Lead vocalist MADDY WALSH displays an expert control of her stirring and soaring voice, sweet, vehement and jocular, whether commanding a crowd with a funky R&B homage or channelling her inner Janis and engaging with a roadhouse stomp. It’s never in doubt who is in control of things around here, but the boys in the band – MIKE SUAVE (guitar), KHRIS OURSLER (bass), ZACH ROHRER (keyboards) and MIKE PARKER (drums)—don’t seem to mind at all, as they employ Walsh’s voice to great effect, using it as inspiration for their diverse and frisky musical wanderings. Rohrer’s syrupy versatile and melodic keys take on a life of their own as Suave’s guitar rabidly rises to the guess-that-genre challenge. Meanwhile, Oursler and Parker lock tight and lay the groove that propels the whole thing forward. Together they wield a modern sound, skillfully and shrewdly assembled from details so timeless The Blind Spots would sound at home anywhere in the last 40 years.
