Bethlehem and Sad Patrick

met at one of the latter’s Germantown cafe open mic events. As the legend goes, a one-time performance for her family and friends became regular weekly visits and an inspiration for Sad Patrick’s melancholy music. What began as a chance night out, eventually grew as his instant admiration for her unique delivery—a blend of blues, jazz and spoken word—led to regular collaborations and studio recordings. PATRICK ARKINS (guitar) provides a snappy and ethereal electric jazz folk, a delicate intimacy perfect for the duo’s small room sound while BETHLEHEM ROBERSON (vocals and percussion) sings, scats, claps, taps, stomps and entices the listener to get down with the duo. Her strong voice recalls the vocalists of yesteryear, smooth and confident, but not afraid to mix it up and get rough with a lyric, stretching or squeezing a note just to get that extra bit of attention from the listener. Occasionally she’ll drop in a poetic, spoken word interlude, adding a charmingly sweet and street-smart space for the powerfully emotive music to breathe and allow the listener to let the conscious lyrical verse sink in. Both reflective and uplifting, a set from Bethlehem and Sad Patrick isn’t so much a musical endeavor as it is a shared experience, lovingly warm and pensively somber.
