Keeping It Cool IN Wilmington

Keep It Cool - IN Wilmingotn

The once-forgotten Humble Park now thrives under the spotlight. The downtown site, also known as Del Tech Plaza on the southeast end of 4th and Shipley Streets, has transformed from an unremarkable corner to a hub for community arts events like the free Keep It Cool Series.

The music, comedy and art installments, manifested by the imagination of Spaceboy Clothing’s David Sanchez, run through the summer and fall.

The next event on Friday, Aug. 3 (7-11 p.m.), features live music by Gozer, EyeBawl and The Bad Larrys. Todd Brewer of Newark’s Rainbow Records will spin vinyl, and Market Street restaurant Farmer & The Cow will serve a “Keep It Cool” burger; food trucks will also be on hand. Upcoming events even include dessert trucks — and if all goes well, beer, says Sanchez.

“The series adds a little more culture, more nightlife options, to Wilmington,” Sanchez says. “And during the day it’s a perfect place to hang out, listen to music, read a book.”

Humble Park itself is small, but once the street is blocked off and the sidewalk is utilized, Sanchez estimates it comfortably fits 300-400 people.

Keep It Cool Series materialized last summer after Sanchez rallied the help of Downtown Visions and support from other city sponsors to revitalize the derelict corner.

“The main goal is to get people to come downtown,” says Sanchez.
